The intake pipes are routed to the valve covers, so pulling the oil cap is going to do exactly what you described. A leak that big is probably a break in the accordion pipes. The pipe that connects the inlet pipes of the turbo to the air box/air filters. It is fairly common as the plastic they are made of dries and splits over time. It would also likely cause what you describe because with a split in one of those pipes, the car is drawing an immense amount of un-metered air, confusing the ECU. It is a pain in the butt, but you can test each section of piping independently and locate your leak.
